How to fix: internal error in the .NET Runtime - BOARD Engine not starting

This is a very rare case of Board Engine crashing due to faulty .NET 4 installation.

 

Symptoms: BoardEngine crashes, in the event viewer you find entries like

Application: BoardEngine.exe
Framework Version: v4.0.30319
Description: The process was terminated due to an internal error in the .NET Runtime at IP 000007FEF9179F7F (000007FEF8F50000) with exit code 80131506.

The issue is caused by a problem in recent .NET 4 updates, Microsoft explain the issue in this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2640103/en-us

Below the suggestions on how to fix the issue, before asking Microsoft for the hotfix.

 

  • Download .NET CleanUp tool and use to clean existing .NET 4 installation
  • Restart the server
  • Check, in case operative system of the Board server is Windows Server 2008,that server role .NET 3.5 is properly configured and restart the server after configuring / installing it
  • Download .NET 4.5.2 full installation package and install it
  • Restart the server
