How to display the unbalanced hierarchy in the collapsed view in the dataview?

Hello Board Team,

A client has an Account entity set up as Unbalanced Hierarchy. They have a simple dataview with 1 block using a cube with actuals, and they want to display Account entity in rows in a collapsed view: e.g. to show "+ 1P SVOD line" by default, and when end-users click on it, 3 revenue sales lines show up, rolled into this line (see screenshot below).

How can we achieve that? Client is on B14.3 at the moment.

From my understanding, I don't believe it's currently possible to expand and collapse an unbalanced hierarchy in a Data View in the same way you can when using two or more entities in the layout.

That said, I can think of two approaches that could provide similar functionality. The first would be to use a Flex Grid instead of a Data View, as it has native tree view support (shown in screenshot 2 below). The second is to use a vertical list selector on the unbalanced hierarchy entity and use that to control how many levels are displayed for each parent on your Data View. This approach would retain the aggregated values at the parent level while allowing the user to decide how many levels of the hierarchy they want to display (also shown in screenshots 5&6 below).

With the Data View + Selector approach, you can set a default selection on the parent members you want, so the screen initially opens with only those groups displayed. If users want to further expand, they can simply right-click a parent member (as shown in Screenshot 5) and select the Children option to reveal the lower levels of that parent member.

Hamza, appreciate your inputs. I believe the view was available in B12, but I might be misremembering.

FlexGrid object can be good for data validation screens, but for reporting screens the dataview is preffered.

Do you know if this has been addressed in B15 by any chance? or part of the future enhancements?

Thanks, @apesyakovaq. I honestly don't remember using it in B12, but I did see a couple of accepted ideas related to it in the idea exchange before B12 was released, so it wouldn't surprise me if it had been added at some point.

Since the introduction of B14, most of the development effort has been focused on Flex Grid, and it's received a lot of enhancements for the B15 release. For example, the fact that Flex Grid can display a UBH in a tree view, which we now know you can't in a standard Data View.

I actually have B15 running on my localhost, and still can't expand or collapse a UBH in a Data View, so I don't believe this functionality is available on it.

I do think that it's a valuable feature, so, by all means, I encourage you to submit an idea for the Product team to evaluate. I'll upvote it!

Hi, late to the party here but I can confirm that there are no plans to make unbalanced hierarchies collapsible in data views currently as far as I know, it's available in Flex Grid as of recent versions but I don't think it's planned to be enabled in data views to the best of my knowledge.
