Hi Board Community,
I'm working on a dashboard in BOARD 15.1 and looking for a reliable way to display 0 instead of N/A in KPI Labels when no records match the current selection.
The example below uses generic names to describe the configuration.
Expected behavior
The dashboard contains KPI Labels showing record counts by status, such as Total, Open, Approved, Issued, and Lost.
Users filter the dashboard by Responsible Person and Time Period. Each KPI should respect these selections:
• All responsible persons → Total number of matching Open records
• A person with Open records → Number of Open records for that person
• A person with no Open records → 0
Current configuration
For the Open Records KPI, my Label Layout contains:
• Block a: an existing numeric Cube, Record Count
• Block b: the Entity Record Status Category
• Block c: an Algorithm identifying the Open status:
IF(b="Open",1,0)
Record Status Category is also configured under Axes → By Row.
With a Layout Filter on Block c to retain the Open status, the Label displays the correct count when matching records exist. However, when the selected person has no Open records for the selected period, it displays N/A.
Approaches tested
- Layout Selection on the Open status
With a Layout Selection of Record Status Category = Open in Keep mode, the KPI works when matching records exist. For some selections without matching records, I receive:
The layout cannot be executed: The layout or the current selection is not valid.
Switching to To avoids this error in some cases, but the resulting values do not consistently match the expected count for the selected person.
- Refer To
I tried applying:
Refer To → Record Status Category = Open
In my configuration, this returns the overall Open count, but the displayed value remains unchanged when I switch between responsible persons. I may be missing something about how this interacts with the Screen Selection or the Relationships in the model.
- Algorithms to return zero
I tested:
IFERROR(a,0)
In my setup, this returned 0 even when Block a had a valid nonzero value.
I also tested:
IF(a<>0,a,0)
This preserves the correct value when matching records exist, but does not resolve the N/A result or invalid-selection error when no records match.
- Removing the Entity from the row axis
If I remove Record Status Category from Axes → By Row, the Label displays 0 when the current selection contains no records.
However, I can then no longer use my current Entity-based Algorithm to isolate the Open status. Applying Refer To brings me back to the selection behavior described above.
Main observation
The key difference appears to be the row-axis configuration:
• With the status Entity on the row axis: the status filter works for populated selections, but empty results display N/A.
• Without the status Entity on the row axis: empty results display 0, but I still need a way to restrict the count to the required status while respecting the Screen Selection.
I can calculate the status counts in a Data View, but would prefer to keep the existing KPI Labels.
Questions
- What is the recommended way to configure a status-specific KPI Label that respects the current Responsible Person and Time Period selections?
- How can the Label display 0 instead of N/A when no matching records exist?
Ideally, I would like to use the existing Cube and Entities without creating additional Cubes or replacing the Labels with Data Views.
Any guidance or examples would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
