Today, we’re welcoming one of the final Community Captains of 2024 —Umesh Bugata— as he shares three of Board's features that you don't want to miss!

Umesh has two years of experience with Board, with four years of experience with several BI technologies and tools, and is enthusiastic about problem solving in the most efficient way. He is particularly involved and invested in the v14 version of Board.

While Board (especially v14) has great things to offer, here are three features that are too good to be missed.

1. Data View Drill-down

While Board has a plethora of drill-down options that can be configured and used as per user requirements, I find the Data View Drill-down feature quite fascinating. Having recently started to use this feature, I found it to be very useful especially since it allows for data entry in the drill-down view across the selected entity by row. As a use-case, we used data view drill-down to allow users to perform multiple mappings in the same data view. There is no need to have a separate screen for mapping.

2. Apply selection to Block

One of the requirements we had from a customer was to allow users flexibility to select the data they want to see in the various columns in the Trend Report. For example, if the trend report is supposed to show actuals and budgeted data, user can choose which data (actuals/budget) to be shown where (columns). While one user may choose to see actuals 2022 in the first column, actuals 2023 in the next, Budget 2024 in the next followed by Budget 2025 another user may want to have a different view (maybe he does not want to see Actuals 2022 and instead he is more interested in comparing Actuals 2023, Budget 2024 and Budget 2025). This feature allowed us to crack the requirement.

The buttons on the screen allow users to make selections on the data (actuals/budget) for different columns marked as A,B,C, and so on. “Apply selection to Layout Block” available only in Capsule Procedures coupled with “@Selection” option in the Layout configuration make this possible.

3. Interactive Selection on rows and columns in a Data view

While I have been using BOARD for almost two years now, I recently realized the importance of this feature. The feature is simple yet powerful. One of the screens that we were building for a customer had a data view with numerous rows and columns, and the requirement was to allow data entry in the data view. Sometimes, in such cases, it is confusing for users to identify the intersection across which they are entering the data leading to errors. The selection option in the data view (icon that pops-up on the top left) solved the issue since it allows users to make a selection on an entity by selecting rows and/or columns.

Thank you, Umesh, for sharing these helpful insights as a Board Community Captain! What Board features do you find particularly useful in your experience? Help the Community improve by sharing your feedback in the comments below.

    Hi @Umesh ,

I really appreciate your insights, thanks!

I'd like to add that it's easier to find the dataview you want to apply the selection on in the according procedure step configuration if it has been given a unique name in the screen

And, since the screen is refreshed after each "Apply selection to block" it might come in handy to change the user's notification reagrding the procedure execution to "Background execution"

So that the screen won't be irritating the user by flickering.

    Best,
    Helmut

That's a great point @Helmut Heimann. "Background execution" seems to be a convenient option. Thanks for sharing.

    Best Regards,

    Umesh
