Data Entry should accept "<" and "~" without doubleclicking into the cell first

Hi all,
this is a small request but currently if you select a cell and enter a number, letter or operator you can write directly into the cell without doubleclicking it first. This does not work with special characters like "<" and "~" (which just subtracts the number).
Support says this is by design, but I don't see a practical reason for end users to keep it that way.
Thank you.

Hi @Remo Bollhalder ,
yeah, that's a pretty annoying behaviour. Can't wrap my head around that, either.
Best,
