Background
When the user mouses over a table, in the top left a small circle appears with three dots in it (used to be lines but in B14 it is dots). Click and a small menu appears with some common buttons and a further … to see more options. From B14 on, you can also right click on the table to get to this menu.
We've noticed that the behaviour of this menu is often surprising, sometimes annoying.
- Firstly, when you open a screen, the menu is now displayed by default. I am not a fan of this approach as it can be distracting for the user, who may or may not want to use that menu.
- If you click the button, click the magnifying glass, type something - it filters for you - click somewhere off the menu, it will close. Click the circle menu again and the magnifying glass button has disappeared.
- Sometimes you search for something and the magnifying glass and/or clear buttons are on the sub-menu.
- When you click the magnifying glass and you are typing, the focus is lost, you have to keep clicking inside the search box to continue typing. Very annoying.
- If you do a search with the magnifying glass, sometimes after, when you click the circle menu, there are only two options!!!
Suggestions
- Simplify this menu and the way it works. Don't have it changing all the time, adding and removing buttons - Board is trying to be too clever. Make it a simple menu where all options are visible all the time.
- The magnify button should allow you to type text in without the focus being lost.
- The search clear option should always be visible, perhaps inside the Search option in addition to a button on its own.
- Allow for the central admin control of the buttons shown on these menus throughout the capsule. This is important for consistency. Configuring each table separately is a management nightmare.
- Allow for the configuration of whether or not the menu is active when the user first enters a screen.
- The Right click brings up a similar menu - however, the right click should have a different purpose. There should be the option to click on a cell in the table, right click to see the available actions specific to the cell, for example, you should provide a copy and paste option. Our users often complain how Board is "weird" because they are so used to other applications with right click copy-paste. Why not in 2025?
