How to migrate user's presentations from 10.3 to 10.5.1 ?

Dear community,

did anyone try to migrate from 10.3 to 10.5.1 with the new capsule format, and what was the impact on the user's presentations ? Does it break everything ? Or is there any workaround to maintain them ?

Since the path changes (.bpcs instead of bpsx) I guess the reference stored in the presentation changes, hence my question ...

  • Hi guys,

    I ran some tests and it looks like the presentation screens are "updated" to link to the new capsule, when the migration process is executed.
    Can somebody confirm this ? Davide Genini ? Björn Reuber ?

    If that is the case, is it possible to trigger this migration by hand ?

    I ask this question because our plan was to migrate all the capsules in the sandbox environment, update them to take advantage of the new functionalities (page sizing, toolbox updates...) and then copy the migrated capsules to production after the version update.
    In that scenario, will my presentations in production be updated ? If no, what do you recommend ?

    Thanks,
    Etienne

    Hi Etienne,

    if i remember it correclty board (10.5) first "looks" when opening a presentations if there is an YourCapsuleName.bcps and if not it looks for YourCapsuleName.cpsx

    Regards

    Björn

  • Hi Björn Reuber, thank you for your feedback. In that case, this would mean that I can just copy the new .bpcs files from sandbox to production and all presentations previously based on the .cpsx files would just use the new one.

    That's good to hear !

    While we are on that topic, do you know if there is any way to "control" presentations from an administrator side ?

    For example, the following would be very useful:

    - after a capsule name change, edit all presentations based on a capsule to "follow" this name change;

    - obtain a list of all presentations based on a given capsule / screen, to anticipate the impacts of any capsule change;

    - obtain a log of who is using presentations and / or obtain a trace in the capsule logs whether the screen was opened through a standard capsule or through a customized presentation.

    It is indeed a big subject for us, each time we need to update the front-end and / or back-end, to make sure we are not disrupting the existing presentations or that we can anticipate the effects.

    Hi Etienne CAUSSE

    about your "Control" Request, ther is right now no way how to do this, but it might be a good Idea

  • Hi Björn Reuber,

    I come back to that topic with a nice example of issue we had. Following migration from 10.3 to 10.6, we updated our main BI application to the new bpcs format. Most presentations are working, but for some reason I cannot explain, some screen ID have changed between both versions of the standard capsule.
    With this change, some presentations cannot find the screen anymore "Oops the screen has been deleted".

    How can we manage those cases ? Apart from recreating the presentations (and we cannot do that for everybody, else the "self service BI" business case is going to die quickly...).

    Is there any way for an administrator to manually edit the presentation "code" or internal references ?

    This kind of issues is recurring, I'm sure there are ways to improve that (for example save the complete screen in the presentation, not just a reference to it ?). In our internal context, this leads some people to challenge the use of Board in that case, as we also have internally Qliksense expertise which looks more robust for Self Service BI.
