Questions about MIGRATION BOARD10.5 to BOARD11

Options

Hello Community, I need some advice before I upgrade.

The conversion of the databases has to be done manually, at least in parts.
This is described in the release notes.

Database Migration

The following activities must be performed to migrate a database to BOARD 11:

Before upgrading to 11, open the database you want to migrate with your current version (BOARD 10.x or earlier).

Got it! No problem!

Extract all cubes from all selected databases. This will create a series of CSV files in your Board\Dataset\database_name folder.

Got it! No problem!

Delete all cubes on the selected databases.

Got it! No problem!

Now install version 11:

Exactly here I am still hesitating!

Since I already have some databases running at the moment, the question for me is how I can manage this most effectively.

If you are a Cloud customer: Send a ticket to the BOARD support to get version 11 in the desired sandbox environment. Our cloud team will perform the deployment and notify you when you are ready.

Open the database with the new version 11 and confirm the database migration. If you have extracted the contents of the cubes in the default path, the migration process will automatically reload the cubes. If you have extracted the contents of the cubes in a custom path, the migration only converts the database, then an additional reload of all cube steps must be configured and performed that points to the custom extraction path.

Got it! No problem so far, but:

HERE ARE MY QUESTIONS:

  • The migration is FINAL! There is NO way back to older versions?
  • Is (in the worst case) a DOWNGRADE from BOARD11 to BOARD10.x a possible option?
  • AFTER the UPGRADE I have NO access to databases in the old structure?
If YES, how can I convert older BOARD databases if BOARD10 is NOT installed anymore or (better) has been replaced by BOARD11? Is there a TOOL for converting Databases?
  • Is it possible to install BOARD10.x and BOARD11 at the same time? I may have to convert older versions after UPGRADE into the new format.

Does any of you have any answers to one question or another?

I would be very glad for your help.

    Hi dirk magerkord

In my opinion conversion have to be made in a development environment, tested in all parts (procedures, reports...) then released in live environment.

Then, I have a question also for Board guys: as told by Pietro Ferrari in the webinar, conversion can be made from 10.3 to 11 without moving to 10.5

Now I have 10.1.2. Can I directly move to 11?

Capsules, then in web, "how much" have to be adjusted?

At this point, which is the sense of 10.5? I mean, if any bug in 10,5 is fixed in next versions (11) noone will migrate to 10.5! Unless 10.5 will also have new releases (parallel to 11 releases) to make the html5 section well working as the last 11 release.

    thanks

Delete all cubes on the selected databases.

    Got it! No problem!

The notes say to clear the cubes, not to delete them.  Have pasted an excerpt from the upgrade instructions in the release notes.  I have installed Board 10.5 and 11 in a virtual environment which allows me to bring up different snapshots for testing purposes and rollback to older versions.

    Database migration

The following activities must be performed to migrate a database to BOARD 11:

Before upgrading to 11, open the database you want to migrate using your current version (BOARD 10.x or earlier)

    • Extract All Cubes on all the selected databases. This will generate a set of CSV files in your Board\Dataset\database_name folder.

    • Clear All Cubes on the selected databases.

    HERE ARE MY QUESTIONS:

    • The migration is FINAL! There is NO way back to older versions? It is meant to be.  If you have VMWare snapshots or full system image backups you could rollback.
    • Is (in the worst case) a DOWNGRADE from BOARD11 to BOARD10.x a possible option? You should be able to with the correct preparation but you may need to speak to a Board specialist.
    • AFTER the UPGRADE I have NO access to databases in the old structure? You convert them to the new format and don't lose anything.
If YES, how can I convert older BOARD databases if BOARD10 is NOT installed anymore or (better) has been replaced by BOARD11? Is there a TOOL for converting Databases?  My experience was Board 11 can understand the Board 10 databases but you need to convert them if you want to modify the structures. It is a simple procedure to convert them.
    • Is it possible to install BOARD10.x and BOARD11 at the same time? I may have to convert older versions after UPGRADE into the new format.  My understanding is no running two different versions can not be done on the same machine.  You should be able to convert older versions as long as they are 10.x.

Why don't you see if you can get a trial time limited licence and setup a test machine based on your production machine and run through an upgrade on your test machine.  You can then test and have confidence to upgrade your production environment.

    hi Greg Heath

Thank you so much for your advice!
These have confirmed my assumptions at one point or another.
By the way, I also received a test license. So now, let testing begin!
    thanks again!

  • Hello,

    Regarding the preparation step:

Clear All Cubes on the selected databases.

Knows anyone how to implement this in a procedure? I have more than 10 databases.

Since the action "extract all cubes into dataset folder" exist as a procedure step, i am wondering if i could create a procedure which triggers the "clear all cubes" action for each DB (one procedure step by DB).

    Hi interested typ,

I think there is no way for a trigger "clear all cube" in one procedure step. You have to do the step manually in each database. In my opinion that´s the better way because you can check the extraction of all cubes before clearing them (sometimes I had trouble with the extractions in history). Then go in each database on cubes and push the button "clear all cubes" manually.
